Facts on latent tuberculosis

Communicable DiseasesBy Onlymyhealth editorial teamMar 21, 2012

As soon as a person is infected with  the bacteria ,in majority of the cases the infection is controlled by the human body’s immune system and does not manifest as a disease. This is referred to as  latent because the infecting bacterium stays alive in the body, but remains inactive for some time. Latent TB is asymptotic and not a threat for other people, as it is non-communicable. Factors such as occurrence of HIV in TB patients, chemotherapy treatment for cancer patients, injection drugs and decreased immunity triggers latent TB to become active TB.
