Vitamin D deficiency is something that most of us do not know much about. It is recently after the coronavirus outbreak that people understood about the importance of this vitamin and how catastrophic can its deficiency be. According to Dr. Anuj Chawla, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at CK Birl Hospital, Gurgaon, vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent in Indians especially those living in northern parts of India. It is because of certain factors like limited exposure to sunlight particularly in urban areas as people are unable to get proper sunlight. Also people with dark skin tone have higher chances of vitamin D deficiency.
Due to increased pollution, the useful UV rays of the sun don’t penetrate through the skin to produce vitamin D and therefore, it lacks in most people. These are some non-specific signs and symptoms of vitamin D deficiency:
- Increased joint and muscle pain in adults
- Vitamin D deficiency can halt the height growth in children
- Suppressed appetite
- Increased susceptibility to infections or getting infections frequently
- Fatigue is also an indirect sign of vitamin D deficiency
- Deficiency of vitamin D can also increase the chances of osteoporosis
