Smart Heart-Healthy Shopping Tips
Be a Healthy Shopper!
What we buy decides how well we eat. And when it comes to grocery shopping, it can rather be intimidating. Find out how you can become a hale and hearty shopper.
While shopping for a healthy heart, don’t forget to include breads, cereals and rice in your diet. Brown rice should be preferred to white variety. “Low fat crackers such as bread sticks, saltines or rice crackers are advisable for a healthy, happy heart. Fast foods should be completely avoided,” says Dr DK Taneja, Prof. Community Medicine, Maulana Azad Medical College.
Whole grains, fibrous foods and oats reduce the cholesterol levels while keeping one’s stomach feeling packed. Whole grains are devoid of fats and have antioxidants which are effortless to fit in one’s diet. “Leafy vegetables and roughage foods accentuate a healthy lifestyle and must be consumed on regular basis. Remember, vegetables are our heart’s soul mate.” says Dr DK Taneja, Prof. Community Medicine, Maulana Azad Medical College.
The Cheese way!
According to a research published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, “A diet rich in milk does not increase the risk of heart disease and stroke, and may even be protective.” So, cheese out your risk of coronary artery diseases, the cheese way!
Eat Fish to Protect Heart
Fish contains omega-3 fatty acids that can condense the risk of heart disease. Doctors advise that fish oil further helps in protecting the heart against inflammation. But here is the catch- doctors say that shellfish is very high in cholesterol and should be avoided as much possible.
Say ‘Hello’ to Friendly Fats
Unsaturated fats such as olive, canola, sesame and soybean oils are the best kind of fats. Olive oil in particular is a great source of monounsaturated fats which is “heart healthy”. So you are not only cutting down on calories but also getting ‘good fats’!
