Tips to Reduce Pet Allergens at Home
Pets may be your best friend, but only if you or any of the members of your family does not suffer from allergies or asthma. And if you do, then you must find out ways to keep pet allergies at bay. Here is some help.
Pets are a man’s best friend. But surprisingly, there applies a condition to it. If you suffer from allergies or asthma, your pets could turn into your worst enemies. Pets shed their dead skin cells and hair, also known as dander, which could be a cause of asthma attacks and allergic reactions in some people. But that does not mean you cannot keep a pet. Here we tell you how to reduce the risk of pet allergens at home.
You can minimize the risk of coming in contact with dander by keeping your pet outdoors as much as possible. Or, at least restrict the entry of your pet in the bedroom where members of the family suffering from allergies or asthma sleep.
Try keeping your pets away from carpets, upholstered furniture and beds. This will help you reduce exposure to dander.
Dusting and vacuuming the house frequently can keep dander away. However, always make sure that the house is cleaned when the person with allergies or asthma is not around.
If your house has air registers for air conditioning or heating, then you must try to reduce the amount of animal dander in that area. If closing the air registers of the entire house is not an option, you must at least try to keep the air registers closed in the room of asthmatic or allergic people in the house.
In a research it was seen that bathing your pet frequently can help you reduce allergens found in their dander.
Although pets kept inside cages do not harm much but the dander and urine produced by these pets can also trigger problems for asthmatics and provoke allergic reactions. Therefore, it is always advisable to clean the cages at least once a week.
Some guidelines recommend that people who suffer from asthma or allergies must avoid keeping pets, especially cats. If the doctor advises you or any member of your family to stay away from dander completely, then you might have to let go of your desire of having a pet.
