Causes of smelly urine
Urine is mainly consist of water having few waste products in it and has no odour. But when the concentration of waste products increases, it tends to appear dark in colour and may also have a strong smell of ammonia. However, certain foods and medications can cause your urine to have a smelly odour, even in low concentrations. Apart from these, certain underlying conditions such as diabetes, urinary tract infection and kidney stones may also give you smelly urine. If the cause is minor, you can easily get rid of ammonia smell from urine. Here are some natural remedies that you can try.
If your urine has dark colour and it smells like ammonia, it may be a sign you’re dehydrated. There is no better way than drinking lots of water to tackle the problem of dehydration. Keep drinking water throughout day regularly and the smell and colour of the urine will go back to normal.
Add some baking soda to water
Another effective remedy that you can try to get rid of smelly urine is baking soda. All you have to do is add teaspoon of baking soda to a glass of water and drink it. According to some studies, drinking baking soda water can avert formation of kidney stones, reduce uric acid and also remove the smell of ammonia from urine. However, if you’ve health conditions like high blood pressure, heart problems, swollen legs or other conditions that need you to avoid sodium, don’t try this remedy as baking soda contains sodium.
Apple cider vinegar
If you don’t like drinking baking soda water, you can use apple cider vinegar instead. Just add some apple cider vinegar in a glass of water and drink it. Repeat it thrice for couple of days.
