Home remedies for red eyes
Red eyes are mainly caused by the dilation of small blood vessels present between the conjunctiva of the eye and the sclera. Eyes can turn red in colour when the blood vessels on the surface of the eyes dilate. The other names of red eye are pink eye and bloodshot eyes. Keeping an item of cool compression over the eyes can be an effective natural way to treat red eyes. You can dip a clean cotton wool or cloth in warm or cold water and then wring it out. Then, place it on your eyes for a few minutes for good results. The cold temperature can help in tightening the skin around your eyes which leads to relaxation of the blood vessels.
Rubbing your eyes can trigger this problem. Another home remedy for red eyes is rinsing or washing them now and then. Put some water on your eyes and it will help in reducing the inflammation and irritants that might be triggering the redness in the eye. Take some water and splash it on your eyes frequently. Repeat this process atleast 3-4 times a day.
Rose water can provide a relaxing and cooling effect on the eyes. Rose water contains anti-inflammatory properties which reduce the irritation in the eyes, in turn relieving the redness as well. To use this as a home remedy, you have to soak two cotton pads in rose water and place it on each eye for atleast 15-20 minutes. You will get positive results surely.
Cucumber is also another effective home remedy for red eyes, just like rose water. It helps in shrinking the blood vessels in the eyes, thus treating this condition. It contains anti-inflammatory properties that can help in reducing puffiness around your eyes. Cut a few cold cucumber slices and place one slice on each eye for around 20-30 minutes. Do this 2-3 times a day.
Do not throw used green tea bags and use them as a home remedy for treating red eyes. Chamomile and green tea bags can help in treating red eyes. They have anti-inflammatory properties that can help in reducing inflammation or swelling in the eyes. Take 2 tea bags and refrigerate them. After they are cool, place them on your eyes for 10-20 minutes. Do this home remedy atleast twice daily.
Castor oil also contains a powerful anti-inflammatory compound known as ricinoleic acid, which can help in dealing with red eyes. Putting a few drops of this oil in your eyes can lubricate and hydrate the eyes and reduce inflammation as well This is an effective home remedy to treat red eyes but it is best to talk to an expert to avoid complications and any potential side effects, if there are any.
Keeping a chilled spoon on the eyes can also help in decreasing the redness in your eyes. The cool temperature of the spoon reduces the inflammation in the eyes. You have to put a metal spoon in cold iced water or a glass full of ice cubes for a few minutes. Then, place it on closed eyelids for 5-7 minutes until you get better results.
Aloe vera is full of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties that can help treat red and irritated eyes. It also has ethyl acetate extracts and ethanol which can help in preventing inflammation of the eyes. Just mix aloe vera gel and water. Put this in the refrigerator for an hour or so. Then, dip 2 cotton pads in it and keep them on your eyes.
Take a tablespoon of warm milk and honey and mix them together. Then, soak a cotton swab in this liquid and apply it on your eyes. Do this for for atleast 20-30 minutes and wash your face. Both the home remedies have soothing and anti-inflammatory qualities that can contribute towards quick healing of red eyes.
