Cold water for hiccups
Cold water gives your system a sudden shock to provide quick relief from hiccups. All you have to do is add some honey to cold water and quickly drink it. You can also use this solution to gargle for 1 minute. Alternatively, you may suck on a small piece of ice for a while until the hiccups subside or vanish.
Hold your breath
One of the oldest cures for hiccups is to hold your breath for a few seconds. When you hold your breath, the amount of carbon dioxide in your bloodstream increases, causing distractions in the mind, thus stopping the cycle of hiccups. Take a deep breath and hold it as long as you can without letting any air out. You will have to exhale gently and in a controlled manner. Keep repeating until hiccups stop.
Sugar for hiccups
Take one teaspoonful of sugar and hold the spoon in your mouth for 5-8 seconds. Let the sugar dissolve slowly without chewing it, and then take a sip of water. Swallowing of sugar will effectively stimulate the vagus nerve and make your mind forget about the hiccups. However, people with diabetes should avoid this remedy.
Lemon for hiccups
The sour taste of lemon affects the irritated nerves, thus stopping the uncomfortable feeling. Put half a teaspoonful of lemon juice in your mouth and swallow it. You can also put a little salt on a small piece of lemon and then suck the juice out of the lemon slowly.
Cardamom for hiccups
Cardamom has muscle-relaxing properties that can make it an effective remedy for hiccups. Just add one teaspoonful of cardamom powder in a glass of hot water. Leave the solution aside for 15-20 minutes and then strain it. Slowly drink this solution. Image Source: getty
