The Not-so Healthy Bread
The hearty benefits of a bread are talked about so fashionably that you would tend to feel proud of yourself on picking it over unhealthy burgers. You do worry about a lot of things before eating but, when it comes to choosing bread you feel safe with all the options. So, it would come as a surprise to many of us to know commercial breads contain harmful ingredients that make it as sinful as any other junk food item. High Fructose Corn Syrup
This artificial sweetener is often made from genetically modified corn and is added to your favourite bread. This harmful ingredient takes the place of sucrose, table sugar, as it is much affordable and gives the bread manufacturers a good opportunity to earn some extra bucks.

Preservatives are bad and all of us are aware of that but, the bread manufacturers usually turn a blind eye towards it. A chemical known as butylated hydroxyanisole is used in breads to prevent it from turning putrid soon. This ingredient has also been listed in the Californian list of chemicals that are known to cause cancer.

Just because this oxidizing agent contains the word `potassium’ in it, it would not transform into a healthy ingredient. This chemical is used to strengthen the bread dough and to make it rise and boost up the volume.

Partially Hydrogenated Oil
This ingredient can multiply the trans fat content of bread manifold. But, if a food contains less than 0.5 grams of trans fat per serving it is not considered to be harmful. However, it may happen rarely that you eat only one loaf of bread at a time. Therefore, the amount of trans fat you consume each time to eat bread is pretty hazardous.

It’s not just about keeping the bread fresh, it is also important to give the bread that freshly baked rustic look. For this, the bread manufacturers use caramel coloring which contains contaminants like 2- and 4-methylimidazole. These chemicals have been found to cause cancer in mice and a possibility of it being carcinogenic to humans has also been stated by the WHO.

You would be shocked to know that your household cleaning products and hair dye contain ammonia which is exactly the same chemical found in your bread. Although it’s consumption in small amounts can be safe but, when you have it regularly it can wreck havoc on your health.

It is an amino acid which is used to decrease the baking time of bread. This chemical is made by dissolving human hair, duck feather and hog hair. It is usually produced in China and is transported to many parts of the world as a bread softener.

Soy content can be found in form of either soybean or soy lecithin in breads. Lecithin behaves as an emulsifier that prevents water and oil from separating which in turn protects the bread from turning stale too soon. But, what raises concern here is that these soy ingredients are usually made from genetically modified soy.
