Asthma occurs when the lungs become inflamed, constricted and are obstructed due to excess mucus formation. There is no complete cure for asthma, but you can relieve its symptoms in your children by adding few healthful foods in their diet. Here are five foods that reduce asthma symptoms in kids.
A rich source of magnesium, spinach can improve asthma symptoms in kids. Asthmatics tend to have a lower level of magnesium in their blood and tissues and therefore, increasing magnesium intake can help ease asthma symptoms. According to a study, 400mg of magnesium a day can alleviate asthma symptoms substantially. Researchers believe that magnesium functions by lowering asthma's characteristic spasms in the smooth muscles located at the upper respiratory tract. Spinach also has good amount of vitamin B that will reduce stress-induced asthma attacks and build and maintain healthy nervous system of your children.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Including 200 grams of salmon fish once in a week in your child’s diet can work wonders for relieving asthma symptoms. Omega 3 fatty acids improve lung functions in asthmatics. Remember that children should not be given fish oil capsules until the doctor prescribes them. You may also give other sources of omega-3 fatty acids such as albacore tuna, flounder, lake trout, halibut, sardines, mackerel, ground flaxseed, flaxseed oil, walnuts, etc.

Foods Rich in Vitamin E
Foods rich in vitamin E contain antioxidants that may aid in reducing lung inflammation caused by asthma. Some rich sources of vitamin E include almonds, almond butter, sunflower seeds and oil, peanut butter, nuts, wheat germ oil, vegetable oils (safflower oil and soybean oil) etc. For significant reduction in asthma symptoms or asthma attacks, it is advisable that you replace saturated fat such as cheese, butter or processed meats with plant-based alternatives rich in vitamin E.

Another food that can help your kids in asthma is dietary fibre. Dietary fibre is associated with improved functioning of lungs. Legumes, whole grains, vegetables and fruits contain great amount of dietary fibre. Increasing the intake of these can help you in managing the asthma symptoms effectively. Consumption of enriched carbohydrate food should be avoided completely. Dietary fibre also strengthens the immune system, thereby providing resistance to asthma friendly elements.
