Heartburn happens when stomach acid backs up into the oesophagus. Here are six foods that can increase the production of stomach acid, causing acid to back up into the oesophagus and lead to heartburn.

Spicy Foods

Spicy foods contain capsaicin which slows digestion and irritates the tissues of the digestive tract, worsening heartburn.

Fried And Fatty Foods

High-fat foods like pizza and fries cause heartburn. These high-fat food make heartburn worse by releasing substances that irritate the oesophagus.

Acidic Foods

Tomatoes and citrus fruits like lemons, oranges, and grapefruits can cause heartburn by irritating the lining of your oesophagus.

Ground beef, chicken nugget-style, and chicken/buffalo wings are some of the meat types that can cause your stomach acid to slush into your oesophagus.

Dairy Products

Dairy products like sour cream, milkshakes, and ice cream can also lead to heartburn and acid reflux. Thus, it is better to consume their alternatives.

Sweets like chocolate are a common trigger of heartburn. Chocolate's cocoa content may raise serotonin levels, which may loosen your sphincter and let acid enter your oesophagus.

The only thing that may be required to treat heartburn is avoiding trigger foods. While some patients may additionally require prescription drugs.
