Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
Stomach acid flows back into your oesophagus. It causes a burning sensation in the chest, often mistaken for heart pain.
Esophageal muscle spasms
The abnormal contraction or spasms of the oesophagus occur due to irregular tightening of the muscles. It causes chest discomfort or pain.
Achalasia
This happens when food cannot reach the stomach due to the lower oesophagus sphincter (muscle ring) not relaxing and being backed up.
Esophageal hypersensitivity
This condition makes the muscles and nerves in your oesophagus too sensitive. It causes regular pressure and acid that can cause chest pain.
Inflammation of the esophagus
The immune system's reaction to infections, food allergies (eosinophilic esophagitis), or ulcer disease can cause it, and it might trigger chest pain.
Abnormal esophageal
It is the unusual changes or damage in the oesophagus that can cause difficulty swallowing and pain in the chest.
