miscarriage common causesMost of the miscarriages happen in the first three months of pregnancy. Health experts have not been able to get to the root cause of this pregnancy loss, so they believe that it may happen due to genetic reasons. However, other factors such as hormonal imbalance, pregnancy at a late age, chromosome defects, uterine abnormalities, weak cervix and lifestyle choices can also be attributed to miscarriage.

Hormonal imbalance

Any hormonal deficiency such as low progesterone results in loss of pregnancy within the first ten weeks of gestation. Women with thyroid problems are also prone to miscarriages. Fortunately, thyroid problem once diagnosed can be easily treated.

Genetic defects

Chromosome defects are one of the most common causes of miscarriage. Chromosomes are thread-like structures within the nucleus responsible for determining genetic characteristics. When the sperm and egg fertilise, if any of the chromosome is faulty, it results in miscarriage.

Uterine abnormalities

Some women are born with uterine abnormalities. They either have a double uterus or a uterus which is irregular in shape. This inhibits the developing foetus to adjust itself in the womb, finally resulting in miscarriage. Sometimes even a weak cervix can burst, letting the baby out. Both these issues can be tackled with the help of corrective surgery.

Unhealthy lifestyle

Unhealthy lifestyle choices can also be one of the miscarriage causes. Habits such as smoking, using drugs and excess intake of caffeine can have a negative effect on the unborn child. Smoking and drug intake can damage the amniotic sac of the uterus and impede the growth and proper development of foetus. This can cause birth defects or even loss of pregnancy.

Nutritional deficiency

Many women suffer from vitamin and mineral deficiencies which in turn affect their chances of conception. If they are fortunate enough to conceive, it can sometimes result in miscarriage during the early months of pregnancy. It has been often noted that such women who become pregnant in their late thirties are at a higher risk of miscarriage.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)

A cause of miscarriage can be polycystic ovary syndrome, immunity disorders, premature membrane rupture and certain accidents. Knowing the causes of pregnancy loss can be advantageous to women as they can take precautions and seek medical help and treatment.

As the cause of a miscarriage is often not identified, they cannot always be prevented. By gaining some knowledge about miscarriage causes, you can avoid such a situation and have a happy pregnancy.
