Ayurveda has a number of excellent suggestions for maintaining your eyes' health.
Cool Water Wash: In the morning, when you wash your face, fill your mouth with cool water and hold it there. Splash cool water over open eyes. This double cooling effect, from outside and from the oral cavity, will make your eyes feel very fresh.
Ghee Lamp: The traditional Ayurvedic way to strengthen and soothe eyes is to gaze at the flame of a ghee lamp. Prepare a ghee lamp by taking a small bowl, placing a cotton wick in it and adding ghee. Set the lamp at a distance of 2 or 3 feet, remove your glasses and gaze at the flame for 2 or 3 minutes without blinking. This procedure will improve the tejas or lustrous quality of the eyes.
Triphala eyewash: Boil 1 teaspoon of triphala in a cup of water for 3 minutes. Cool the tea, and strain it with double or triple folded cheesecloth or a paper coffee filter so that no particle of triphala is left in the tea. Wash your eyes with the tea.
Castor oil Remedy: At bedtime, put 1 drop of pure castor oil, with no preservatives, into each eye. Also rub 1 teaspoon of the oil into the soles of your feet. Next morning your eyes will feel really fresh!
To soothe burning eyes: For a burning sensation in the eyes, put 1 drop of lukewarm liquid ghee in each eye at bedtime. That will lubricate the eyelid and eyelashes and will also soothe and strengthen your eyes.
Rose water: You can also put three drops of pure rose water into each eye. Rose water is cooling.
Yoga for eyes
Assume a sitting position with the legs straight in front of the body.
Hold the arms straight and out to the sides at shoulder level, with the thumbs pointing upward.
Without moving the head sideways, focus the eyes on the following, one after the other:
a) Left thumb
b) Space between the eyebrows (bhrumadhya)
c) Right thumb
d) Space between the eyebrows Repeat this cycle 15 to 20 times and then rest.
Front Sideways Viewing
Maintain the same position as in exercise 1, but place the left thumb on the left knee so that it points upward. Hold the right thumb to the right of the body so that it points upward.
Without moving the head, focus the eyes on the left thumb, then on the right thumb and then return to the left thumb.
Repeat this process 15 to 20 times, then rest and close the eyes, practicing the technique mentally.
Repeat the same procedure on the left side of the body.
Maintain the same body position as in exercise 1. Place the left hand on the left knee and hold the right fist above the right leg.
The right thumb should point upward and the arm must be straight.
Make a large circular movement with the right thumb, moving to the left, then upward, curving to the right and finally returning to the starting position.
Keep the eyes focused on the thumb without moving the head. Repeat this practice times clockwise and 5 times anti-clockwise with each thumb. Finally close the eyes and rest.
Up Down Viewing
Maintain the same position as exercise 1. Place both fists on the knees, with both thumbs pointing upward. Keeping the arms straight, slowly raise the right thumb, while following the motion of the thumb with the eyes. On reaching the highest elevation, slowly return to the starting position, all the time keeping the eyes focused on the thumb without moving the head. Practice the same movement with the left thumb. Repeat 5 times with each thumb. Finally, close and rest the eyes.
