Eating avocado daily helps in the regulation of LDL or bad cholesterol levels in the body. Read this research to know more.
Avocado is a superfood that is known to be extremely beneficial for health. From reducing weight to controlling diabetes, avocado can manage it all. Apart from these, is it also found to lower bad cholesterol in the body. As per a study published in the Journal of Nutrition, eating avocado daily lowered LDL levels in the consumer’s body.
“People should consider adding avocados to their diet in a healthy way, like on whole-wheat toast or as a veggie dip,” says lead author Penny Kris-Etherton.
In this research, participants were asked to follow an avocado diet for about five weeks. Their LDL levels were recorded before starting this diet. After five weeks of eating avocado daily, researchers found that bad cholesterol levels significantly lowered down in their bodies. This indicates that avocado helps in the reduction of LDL in the human body. Also, it increased antioxidant ‘lutein ’ levels in the body to prevent the oxidation process which is highly damaging for human health and body.
“When you think about bad cholesterol, it comes packaged in LDL particles, which vary in size. All LDL is bad, but small, dense LDL is particularly bad. A key finding was that people on the avocado diet had fewer oxidized LDL particles. They also had more lutein, which may be bioactive that’s protecting the LDL from being oxidized,” told Kris-Etherton.
“A lot of research points to oxidation being the basis for conditions like cancer and heart disease. We know that when LDL particles become oxidized, that starts a chain reaction that can promote atherosclerosis, which is the build-up of plaque in the artery wall. Oxidation is not good, so if you can help protect the body through the foods that you eat, that could be very beneficial. However, more research needs to be done.” concluded Kris-Etherton.
