Whether you are destined for diabetes or not depends on certain obvious factors that are major causes of diabetes such as obesity despite of engagement in activities, family history and terrible eating habits. Diabetes is a lifetime chronic health problem that stems from an elevated blood sugar level in the body.

Diabetes is hard to classify as a harsh or mild disease because of the range of experiences that people with diabetes have i.e. while there are some, who experience only thirst and dizziness throughout their diabetic term, others go to the extremes of undergoing amputation. The American Diabetes Association says that diabetes is a serious illness that causes more deaths in a year than AIDS and breast cancer combined.

Doctors all across the world cite rising figures of diabetic patients due to an over indulgence in processed food, sweets, juice drinks and sugar-filled foods, which cannot be controlled unless power is administered to a higher authority.

To know if you are destined for diabetes, check the following:

  • Find out if you are obese or overweight. A lot of doctors specialising in treating diabetes consider the body mass index to be an accurate measure of obesity. If your BMI is 30 or more, you are obese and most likely to develop diabetes. Abdominal fat also adds to the probability of developing diabetes the reason of which has not been confirmed yet. A waistline of 40 inches or more in men and 35 inches or more in women is likely to lead to the development of diabetes.
  • Find out if you eat unhealthy. With the importance of green vegetables and fruits being discussed worldwide, knowing what good diet is is not difficult. To prevent diabetes, consume less of processed food and sugar.
  • Find out if you live a sedentary lifestyle. How much of activity do you indulge in? Does climbing a few flights of stairs leave you winded? If you have a sedentary lifestyle, gradually shift to a 30 minutes per day walk to set en route better health.
  • If you are above 45, you have a great risk of developing diabetes because doctors say that it is at this age that one’s body begins to slow its functions down by a level. Therefore, one must take special care after 45.
  • Find out if anyone in your family is a diabetic. Family history of diabetics increases the likelihood of getting diabetes, which can be held off by indulging in exercise and healthy eating.
