Exercising during Navaratri may help you maintain a healthy weight and improve your overall well-being.
Today marks the beginning of Navaratri 2023. This is the period when the Hindu community worldwide fasts for nine days, worships goddess Durga and performs family rituals. Navaratri is also a great time to take your fitness to the next level because fitness is all about eating clean, and during Navaratri, you fast, and eat less. When you fast, your body detoxifies and if you indulge in some type of physical activity you can also boost your metabolism. But the question is, what kind of workout should you do, and how frequently should you exercise? So, if you want to lose or maintain your current weight, let's start by determining what you should focus on over the next nine days.
As you will be fasting for the majority of the day, you will most likely be eating less, so it is critical that you stick to your current workout routine and avoid beginning a new one. When you start something new, your body experiences a shock, and in order to recover from that shock, your body requires fuel, which you will not be able to provide while fasting. Listening to your body is also important; if you are tired most of the time, it is best to avoid physical activity. Rest is an essential component of physical fitness because it is during rest that the human body grows and gains strength.
People often swear by the phrase "go hard or go home" when it comes to working out. The phrase is correct because muscle breaks and new cells are formed in uncomfortable situations. Going hard on days when you have enough fuel inside your body is acceptable, but going hard on days when you are eating less and have less energy can result in overtraining. Overtraining should be avoided because it has a negative impact on both the mind and the body. So, for the next nine days, try not to exercise for more than 45 minutes.

Weight training combined with cardio is one of the most effective methods for losing fat and gaining muscle. When you are in a deficit, you are already burning fat, and doing both can ruin your fasting efforts as well as slow down your metabolism. What's best is that you can alternate between weights and the treadmill. On days when you don't have much energy, go for cardio; on days when you do, go for weights.

It is said that if you want to reap the benefits of yoga, you should practice it on days when you eat only fruits and boiled vegetables, with no added spices, salt, or sugar. Because we eat mostly clean foods during Navaratri, it's an ideal time to try yoga for both your body and mind. Begin with a 20-minute yoga session and gradually increase the time based on how your body responds. Make sure to practice pranayam and surya namaskar for the first few days.
