Larynx Cancer: Know About Its Unusual Symptoms

Cancer of the larynx or vocal cords occurs when cells in your larynx grow uncontrollably. These cancerous (malignant) cells penetrate tissues and cause damage to your body as they multiply.

Symptoms Of Larynx Cancer

Larynx cancer or Laryngeal carcinoma affects the larynx, which is part of the throat. Your larynx assists you in speaking, breathing, and swallowing. It houses your vocal cords. Symptoms of larynx cancer are as follows: 

A Change In Your Voice Or Hoarseness

One of the most typical symptoms of larynx cancer is hoarse voice. If you have a hoarse voice for more than three weeks, you may have laryngeal cancer. However, a hoarse voice can be caused by a variety of factors. Acute laryngitis is one of the most common causes (inflammation of the larynx). This is frequently caused by:

• A common cold or a chest illness
• Excessive use of one's voice, such as shouting or screaming

Pain While Swallowing

This can influence you in a variety of ways. You might feel that there is something small trapped in your throat, and you are unable to swallow food. Difficulty in swallowing is followed by pain or a burning sensation. Sometime you will feel that bolous is stuck in your throat.

Breathing Difficulty

Some people get a persistent cough or find it difficult to breathe. Their respiration may become agitated which is called a stridor. 

Stridor and shortness of breath are important symptoms that should not be overlooked. You should consult a doctor right away.

Weight Reduction

Many malignancies, particularly advanced laryngeal and hypopharyngeal carcinoma, cause weight loss. It is extremely improbable that this is the lone symptom.

It could be because you're eating less because of pain or difficulties face while swallowing your food. 

Ear Ache

When it comes to our health, ear pain can be a symptom of a variety of conditions, including a cold, sinus infection, or allergies, as well as compacted ear wax or just a change in air pressure. It might be difficult to tell if your ear ache is due to a transitory ailment or something more serious, such as throat cancer.

Arnold's nerve, in particular, is a branch of the vagus nerve that provides feeling to the back of the throat.

Arnold's nerve provides feeling to the ear, thus when you have pain in your throat, the referred pain is felt in your ear. This nerve link is also responsible for some people coughing when getting their ears cleaned - a condition known as an ear-cough-reflex.

Who Is Predisposed to Larynx Cancer?

Excessive tobacco use, including smoking and chewing tobacco, excessive alcohol use, poor nutrition (no fruits and seasonal vegetables), toxic drug exposure, and gastroesophageal reflux syndrome are all risk factors for throat cancer (GERD).
