Flu is contagious and you might get sick before you know it. You can practice a few rules at home that will keep you healthy and avoid the flu from spreading.

Flu is contagious and you might get sick before you know it. The flu germs transfer as soon as you come in contact of an infected person. It spreads even before the symptoms appear. The highly contagious nature of the flu makes it fearsome and even the thought of it can make some people sick to their stomach. It can cause a tremendous amount of discomfort but it also goes away with a few medicines. However, you can practice a few rules at home that will keep you healthy and avoid the flu from spreading. 

Cover your mouth and nose

When we sneeze or cough, a virus droplet might come out and infect the other person. You should cover your mouth with a tissue or a handkerchief to keep yourself from infecting others around you. Wash your hands right after you use that tissue to clean up. 

Wash your hands frequently 

Washing your hands is the best way to prevent the flu or avoiding cold. Make sure to wash your hands with lukewarm water and scrub with soap for at least 20 seconds to get rid of germs. Keep reminding your kids and friends to wash their hands after every time they eat and use the bathroom. 

Clean your house 

Germs generally lurk around the items we use every day such as home desks, kitchen sponges, sinks, toilets, etc. Take special care of things when washing them to avoid the bacteria from breeding in those spaces. 

Get vaccines on time 

There are plenty of vaccines available at the hospitals that can keep you protected from the flu virus. From a young child of 6 months to an adult, everyone should get vaccinated to avoid such infections. 

Follow a healthy lifestyle 

A healthy lifestyle promotes good health and wards off all illnesses including the flu. The following tips can help your immune system become healthy and strong: 

Eat healthy: vegetarian foods are a good source of antioxidants and phytonutrients that fight against illnesses. Eat food rich in fibre, vitamins, antioxidants, healthy carbs and proteins. 

Exercise: Get sufficient exercise by indulging in some daily physical activities. Even a 15-minute walk daily can help you get fit and avoid diseases such as influenza, diabetes and hypertension.

Drink lot of water: Water is excellent at flushing out toxins from the body and it does wonders to your body. You should drink approximately 3-4 litres water a day.

Get enough Vitamin D: The most important source of Vitamin D is the sun. Vitamin D is needed for the body to absorb calcium and boost immunity. So, the next time you step out - make sure that you get enough of that sun.

Sleep properly: To keep diseases at bay, get adequate sleep of at least 6-8 hours. 

Limit contact with an infected person 

Take a few precautions if someone gets the flu in your family including: 

  • Stay away from that person as much as you can as the flu is contagious
  • Keep that person inside the house to avoid further infections 
  • Do not share clothing items such as washcloths, dishes, toys and utensils
