Pneumonia is an infection that can be quite harmful for your body. It affects your lungs and air sacs inside it because of which they become inflamed. It causes cough and phlegm along with other problems such as difficulty in breathing, fever, chills, and pus. There could be multiple reasons that can cause pneumonia. A person must be well aware of this condition in order to prevent it. It can be caused because of virus, bacteria, fungi and variety of organisms. Unfortunately there is no as such home remedy that can totally eradicate pneumonia from the body. However it can manage symptoms of pneumonia to control this disease. It affects children and adults more severely and thus it is better to take necessary precautions.

Home Remedies To Control Symptoms of Pneumonia

Cough is a persistent and a primary symptom of pneumonia. It may come as early as in first 24 hours of infection and lasts till the very end. If this symptom is controlled, then a lot of parameters can come under control. Coughing helps to get rid of the infection by removing unnecessary fluid from the lungs, but it can result to pain and irritation in the throat. Here are some home remedies for pneumonia causing cough.

1. Do a saltwater gargle

Gargles are always beneficial for cough relief. They also provide calmness to the rash throat during pneumonia. Saltwater gargle can be done at anytime of the day. It can help you get rid of the mucus in your throat and provide relief. 

  • Gargle saltwater can be made in these 3 steps
  • First take a glass filled with warm water and add ½ tablespoon of salt into it. 
  • Mix the salt in the water thoroughly
  • Now go to a washbasin and gargle with that solution 3 times in a day.

2. Hot Peppermint Tea

Peppermint is a very good remedy for pneumonia as it has an anti-inflammatory property that helps to expel mucus from the throat and body. This is effective remedy for treating bad cough and also works as a painkiller for pain in throat and other parts of the body. People can have peppermint tea twice in a day to relief cough and related issues. You can also make peppermint tea at home if you have peppermint in your house.

To make peppermint tea-

  • Wash and cut the fresh mint leaves first
  • Then put it inside a pan that has water in it for the tea
  • Now boil the water for about 5 minutes
  • After boiling, add some lemon, honey or milk for flavour
  • Inhaling aroma of peppermint tea can also relief cough from your nasal passage and throat.

The other symptom for pneumonia is having persistent fever. People get remittent fever during pneumonia and it becomes important to control this symptom to reduce pneumonia as well. For this, these remedies can work-

3. Taking pain relievers 

Over the counter medicines help to lower down the fever and body ache that comes along with it. Sometimes it becomes unbearable and that person cannot even take rest properly. Hence it becomes important to give pain relievers in order to control the symptom of fever and pain. Pain relievers should be taken after eating a meal only. Otherwise it may have side-effects on the body such as nausea and headache

4. Apply lukewarm compress

Lukewarm compress is given to relax the body and lower down your temperature. Pneumonia can rise body temperature above 102 degree Celsius which can be comparatively problematic. Hence it is better to give yourself or the person lukewarm compress gradually over head and upper body. You can use a towel to give this compress.

For this-

  • Take a small towel and dip it in lukewarm water
  • Now squeeze the excess water from it and place towel on your forehead
  • Compress it to give relaxed feeling
  • Repeat this 4-5 times in a day for effectiveness and lowering down the temperature

For Shortness of Breath

This happens quite often in the condition of pneumonia. Therefore severe patients suffering from this disease are given oxygen mask to that there isn’t any sudden collapse. As a remedy you can do the following-

5. Drink a cup of coffee

Coffee is quite beneficial in reducing the risk of person suffering from shortness of breath. This happens because caffeine contains a drug that is used for treating bronchitis’s problems. The drug found in coffee is bronchodilator and can open up airflow in your lungs. Drinking a cup of coffee can give relief to your symptoms and work as an effective remedy against shortness of breath. 

For Chest Pain

Chest pain may occur at certain intervals or at sudden movements when you do not expect it to happen. Hence it is crucial to control this symptom as it can be very painful and discomforting. You can expect chest pain in any movement, hence here is a remedy to keep it in control and reduce risk of chest pain.

6. Turmeric Tea

Turmeric has many beneficial properties such as anti-inflammatory properties, antioxidants and anti-microbial properties that help to give relief from chest pain. It also reduces the risk of chest pain and calms down the body during pneumonia Turmeric tea can be efficient in turning down many other symptoms of pneumonia as well. 

Way to make turmeric tea-

  • Add one teaspoon of turmeric power in boiling water
  • Reduce the heat and let it boil for 10 minutes
  • Now put some honey and lemon into it
  • Add a pinch of black pepper 
  • Now drink it as you like per your convenience
  • You can have turmeric tea twice a day.
