Fingers can swell due to several and it can get very hard to even touch things. This can happen due to insect bites, injury, fluid retention, infection, too much salt intake and hormonal changes in the body. And, if our fingers become swollen or painful, it can be very difficult to carry on with the day to day tasks of life. Read on to know about effective home remedies to get rid of swollen fingers.

Epsom salt

Epsom salt contains magnesium sulphate, that can prove to be beneficial for treating swollen fingers. It can help in reducing the swelling effectively and even instantly sometimes. Just take a bowl of hot water and put 2 tablespoons of epsom salt in it. Then, soak your fingers in the bowl for 10-15 minutes. You can repeat this home remedy atleast two times a day everyday.

Oil massage

An oil massage can improve the blood circulation in your fingers and provide instant relief in swelling and pain. It can treat sore muscles and make you feel relaxed. For this purpose, you can use any type of oil including coconut, mustard and olive oil. A warm oil massage for 10-15 minutes is one of the best home remedies to treat swollen fingers. 


Turmeric contains an active component called curcumin and it has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which help in treating any kind of pain, swelling and inflammation. Take half teaspoon of turmeric powder and mix it with a few drops of olive oil. Then, apply it on the swollen fingers while massaging gently. Follow this home remedy atleast twice a day daily.

Finger exercises

Another effective home remedy to get rid of swelling in fingers is finger exercises. If the cause behind your swollen fingers is poor blood circulation or fluid retention, then this natural way might work for you. There are many finger exercises that can help in reducing swelling. Close your fingers into a fist and hold it for atleast a minute. Open your fingers slowly and stretch them. Do this a number of times during the day.

Black tea bags

Black tea bags are loaded with antioxidants and tannins that can help in reducing the swelling in your fingers. You can make black tea at home using a black tea bag. Then, remove the tea bag and keep it in the fridge for 10-15 minutes. Keep the cold black tea bag on the affected finger for 5-10 minutes. You can do this home remedy twice or thrice a day.

Ice pack

Ice pack is also a great natural way to get rid of swollen fingers, no matter what the cause. Cold compression can help in reducing the inflammation in your fingers. Just take a few ice cubes and wrap them in a dry clean cloth or towel. Hold the towel on your affected fingers for around 5-10 minutes. You can even use a market bought ice pack for this purpose. 


Potato is great to reduce swelling in fingers as it has anti inflammatory properties. Cut a slice of potato and apply it on the swollen fingers. This can help in reducing the swelling, redness and even itching. You can even put epsom salt on the potato slice to make this home remedy even more effective. 


Onion contains antibiotic and antiseptic properties that can be beneficial in treating swollen fingers. You can cut slices of onion at home and apply it on the affected fingers. Using this kitchen ingredient is one of the easiest home remedies to get rid of swelling in fingers. It can even provide relief from itching and swelling.

Aloe vera

Aloe vera is a multipurpose natural ingredient that can be used for both beauty and health benefits.
