Consumption of dietary supplements puts children and young adults at a higher risk of various health risks, says study.
Dependence on dietary supplements is increasing with time. Dietary supplements are used as a short cut to achieve fitness goals, especially among youngsters. From weight loss to weight gain or energy boosters the consumption of dietary supplements is quite popular among teenagers. But the consumption of dietary supplements can be loaded with health hazards.
According to a recent study, children and teenagers who consume dietary supplements are at a higher risk of health problems as compared to those who consume vitamins.

The study was published in the Journal of Adolescent Health. The study also mentioned that dietary supplements increase the risk by three times. The study further explained that the kind of health risk which consumption of dietary supplements can trigger. The study mentioned health events like death, disability and hospitalisation between the age of 0 to 25 years. These risks are linked with the use of dietary supplements commonly used for weight loss, muscle building or as energy boosters.
"The FDA has issued countless warnings about supplements sold for weight loss, muscle building or sports performance, sexual function, and energy, and we know these products are widely marketed to and used by young people," said lead author Flora Or.

For the study individuals of a particular age were examined. The study revealed 977 supplement related cases out of which 40% faced severe medical conditions.
The study also suggests the consumption of natural nutrients over dietary supplements to stay healthy. At a growing age, children and young adults should not depend on dietary supplements. Children should consume a balanced diet which includes multiple nutrients.
