Simple Ayurvedic Herbal Remedies for Healthy Monsoons

Varsha Rithu or the Monsoon period that commences from mid-June and continues till August, it is usually a period of relief from harsh heat during the summers but with their respite, they also bring along ailments. Every monsoon season, the risk of catching various diseases is extremely high due to unhygienic conditions and not adhering to basic preventive measures. Even after undergoing various treatments and medicines, there are higher chances of getting the monsoon flu which eventually leads to allergies, lung cancer, and asthma in the long run if not taken care of.

As per Ayurveda expert Dr Smita Naram, Co-Founder, Ayushakti, the balance of Vata, Pitta, and Kapha are disproportioned during the monsoon season. The Pitta that signifies digestive fire in the human body gets affected. Due to this, digestion weakens and this serves as the basis for various diseases. 

During Monsoons, there are some ailments like:

  • Cold
  • Cough
  • Asthma
  • Skin problems like rashes, burning, itching, and dandruff

For a solution to all this Ayurveda recommends consuming certain natural herbs in different recipes for maintaining a balance between the doshas. Here are certain Ayurvedic herbs that have various health benefits which should be incorporated in the form of simple home remedies for the monsoon to prevent ourselves from getting sick:

For Cold and Congestion

A combination of Turmeric, Basil, Ginger, Garlic, and Black pepper is an effective home remedy for congestion and cold. The recipe to it is as follows:

Ingredients:

  • Fresh Ginger (Adrak) Juice-   ½ Teaspoon
  • Turmeric (Haldi) Powder- ½ Teaspoon
  • Garlic (Lehsoon) Juice- ¼ Teaspoon
  • Fresh Basil (Tulsi) Leaf Juice- 2 Teaspoon
  • Honey (Madh)- 2 Teaspoon
  • Black Pepper (Kali Mirch) powder- 2 Pinch

Method

Mix it well and have it twice a day to feel better.

For Calming Pitta Dosh

For decreasing the fire element in the human body and calming down the Pitta, a mixture of Cumin, Coriander, and Fennel is highly effective, the recipe is as follows:

Ingredients:

  • Cumin Powder-1 tsp
  • Coriander Powder- 1 tsp
  • Fennel Powder- 1 tsp 

Method:

  • Soak all the above in 1 liter of water for 2 hours
  • Fill it in a bottle (along with material) and then drink that water a little throughout the day.

For Better Digestion

For making the digestive system stronger during the monsoons, a blend of Ajwain, Black pepper, ginger and Asafoetida is perfect for digestion, the recipe is as follows:

Ingredients:

  • Cumin powder-  ½ Tsp
  • Dry Ginger powder- ½ Tsp 
  • Black Pepper Powder- ¼ Tsp
  • Ajwain powder- ¼ Tsp 
  • Asafoetida (Hing) Powder- 2 Pinches 

Method:

Boil all above in 1 Glass of water for 2 minutes and drink it warm; 1- 2 times a day time (before or after food)

For Infections

To get rid of rashes, itching, burning and pain, a mixture of powerful herbs like Yashtimadu, Neem, and Turmeric are highly effective, the recipe is as follows:

Ingredients:

  • Ghee- 100 gms
  • Turmeric powder-10 gms
  • Yastimadhu- 05 gms.
  • Sesame oil- 30 ml
  • Water- 300 ml
  • Neem Leaves- 20 gms

Method:

Warm the ingredients and massage the affected areas with them. Do it 2 to 3 times a day.

For Great Metabolism

For a balanced metabolism for monsoons, it is essential to consume Ginger on daily basis, the recipe to intake Ginger is as follows:

Ingredients:

  • Dry Ginger Powder- 1 Tsp
  • Water-1 litre

Method

Mix ginger and water for 5-10 mins and then fill it in a thermos and drink throughout the day.
