Yoga for Weight Gain

Yoga forr weight gainToday, yoga has become a popular technique for reducing weight. But there are also some equally effective yoga exercises to gain weight. Yoga asanas or postures like shav asana (or corpse pose) are effective yoga exercises for weight gain. They are not that difficult to practice either. For example, shav asana involves placing one’s self in the supine position and then breathing easily. It is one of the easiest aasanas to be performed with minimum activity as compared to the more difficult ones. Usually, being underweight, a person lacks the stamina and therefore gets tired very easily. For such people, a regular practice of yoga helps in building the required stamina and increases the appetite of the practitioner.


Another well known exercise is sarvang asana (or shoulder stand). Depending on the functioning of one’s body, this posture helps in normalising the weight from less to optimum weight.


How to do Sarvangasana:

  • Lie down on the floor, keeping both legs together, with palms facing the ground.
  • While inhaling, lift your hips from the ground and raise your legs above your head first at an angle of about 30 degree, gradually 90 degree, and finally at 130 degree.
  • Hold this position till a count of five and then slowly breathe out and straighten both legs to a 90 degree angle, back to the floor.
  • Then, with your elbows on the ground, support your back with your palms.
  • Slowly move your hands to your shoulder blades and raise your body higher.
  • Try to bring your elbows in so that they are aligned with the shoulders. Very slowly, try to raise your body to the highest possible extent so that it rests on your shoulders and not the back.
  • An important point to note here is that when you are lifting your body up, it is advisable to exhale. And once it is up, the breathing pattern can become normal. Retain the position for as long as possible.

There is a wide range of yoga exercises for weight gain. It is, therefore, important that one consults a yoga professional for this. The reason is that you wouldn’t want to suffer the repercussions of practicing yoga in the wrong way. Thus, in order to find an exercise that suits one’s body, the whole system needs to be analysed, something that only a professional yogic can do.

 

Along with these yoga exercises, to increase the fat in the body, one should also eat a little more than the normal amount consumed. But again, try to avoid unnecessary fatty foods. Since the mantra is to consume more calories than the amount burned, one should concentrate more on the amount of milk products you take in a day – cheese, shakes, milk, smoothies, and yogurts will help in the process of weight gain.


In short, one must practice these yoga asanas on a daily basis, along with a proper diet required for weight gain in order to see satisfactory results. Again, it is always consult a doctor before beginning any form of exercise.


Also keep in mind that putting on body weight calls for the same amount of concentration and preparation that is required to lose weight. There are no magic portions or instant weight loss powders. It takes some time – less for some, more for others – to gain weight. Yoga has always proven helpful here.
