Take up Yoga or Weight Training to Keep Diabetes at Bay

A recent study finds that 3.5 hours of yoga or moderate-intensity weight lifting exercise a week halves the risk of developing diabetes.

yoga weight lifting prevents diabetesDiabetes can be prevented with just half an hour's exercise a day, suggests a study carried out by scientists from Harvard School of Public Health and the University of Southern Denmark. Doing so can reduce risk of type 2 diabetes by 40 percent and just an hour's workout a week cuts the risk by 13 percent.

The researchers examined 100,000 women, to study the effects of weekly time spent on resistance exercise, lower intensity muscular conditioning exercises, aerobic moderate and vigorous physical activity.

It was found that yoga and muscle-strengthening exercises such as weight lifting can fend off the condition. Moreover, they found that those who did at least 150 minutes of aerobic activity in a week combined with an hour of muscle-strengthening had the best results.

The study was published in the PLOS Medicine journal.
