A new study on happiness in long-term relationships has found that men need to cuddle to be happy but women like to indulge in sexual intercourse. This is a departure from the generally accepted notion that women crave to be cuddled after sex. Researchers found that simple acts of affection in everyday life such as hugging and kissing were important for men to be happier than women.
Over 1,000 participants participated in the study carried out by researchers of Indiana University. The participants belonged to 5 different countries and aged between 40 and 70. The questionnaire prepared for the participants was aimed at gauging the level of happiness and its co-relation to acts of affection such as kissing and hugging.
Men who had enjoyed more cuddling and kissing with their partner were found to be three times happier than those who did not. On the other hand, women reported that these shows of affection did not affect their level of happiness. The women had more satisfying sex lives after being in a relationship for 15 years or more. This was also reported by men but they differed with women in the scale of happiness.
The most intriguing finding of this study is that after being in a relationship for 15 years or more, men were inclined to be more satisfied with their relationship while women reported more satisfying sex lives. The first 15 years of a relationship was not as sexually satisfying for women as after that. Lead author of the study, Julia Heiman said that the first fifteen years of a relationship can be emotionally draining for a woman, particularly because it coincides with the time of raising children. After the children are grown up, they are relieved from a responsibility and this allows them to be more relaxed about their lives.
Heiman revealed that the team of researchers did not expect to find what they actually did. The purpose of this study was to examine the factors that make successful long-term relationships click. The findings of the research give us a message of not having pre-conceived notions based on gender. It certainly warrants more investigation.
