Why You Cant Get Pregnant
For some women, it is easy, and for others, it could take a while. Getting pregnant is not a one step process and could take some trying. But if you’ve been trying and having some difficulty in conceiving, you may want to go through the list below to know what it could be that you’re up against. There are several reasons why a woman is unable to conceive. We asked Delhi-based gynaecologist, Dr. Anjana Mann about some of those. Read on.
It is important to first understand how the process of conception occurs. A successful pregnancy begins when a sperm and an egg meet, join together and get attached to the endometrium (uterine wall). Every month (or to be more accurate, in every menstrual cycle, one ovum (or egg) is released by one of the two ovaries in a woman. This process of ovulation usually occurs about 14 days before the end of the menstrual cycle (around the middle). Intercourse in the week immediately following ovulation can lead to a higher chance of getting pregnant.
Sometimes, problems such as erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, a narrow introitus (opening to the vagina) etc can be problemsatic. These are all problems related to intercourse. If these are not the issues, there is a possibility of low sperm count or low motility in the sperm of the man. It is important to remember that the use of lubricants, etc during intercourse could also be a problem. Artificial lubricants could trap sperm and even act as sperm-killers (spermicides).
There also could be a problem within the uterus, where the formed zygote must hold on. Sometimes, the endometrium may be damaged, and can therefore not provide a base on which the zygote can attach and grow. The common causes of this kind of endometrial damage could be some infection or STDs or even tuberculosis.
But before you self diagnose, it is important to consult a doctor. It is very likely that you are overreacting and there really isn’t a problem at all! Good luck!
