Who is at Risk of Smallpox?

Smallpox has been eradicated by the intense global immunization campaign and the last naturally occurring case of smallpox was reported in 1977. Currently people at risk of smallpox infection include:
- People working with smallpox virus (such as in the research lab) or people working in a smallpox diagnostic laboratory.
- People exposed to smallpox virus if it is used as a biological weapon.
Persons at risk of smallpox infection (such as people working with smallpox virus in research labs or diagnostic labs) should be revaccinated every year was per WHO’s recommendation as a precautionary measure.
