Electrocardiogram is done to record the electrical activity of the heart. The EKG machine detects the electrical impulses that contract the heart. The EKG helps in identifying the cause of symptoms such as palpitations or chest pain. The EKG is a painless and harmless test.

How Is It Done?

Small metal electrodes are attached to the arms, legs and chest. And these electrodes are connected to the EKG machine to detect and amplify the electrical impulses that occur at each heart beat. These electrical impulses are recorded on either on a paper or computer. Different sets of electrodes are used to record heart beats.

People who have heart conditions or diseases undergo EKG and it is done know the following things about the heart.

if there is any damage to the heart
How fast the heart is beating
Heart beating is normal or not
Effects of drugs on heart
the size and position of heart chambers

Signs and symptoms that suggest that you need to get EKG done include:

  • Chest pain
  • Heart pounding, racing, or fluttering, or the sense that your heart is beating unevenly.
  • Problems breathing
  • Feeling tired and weak
  • Unusual heart sounds when your doctor listens to your heartbeat


You may need to have more than one EKG so your doctor can diagnose certain heart conditions.
