Electrocardiogram is done to record the electrical activity of the heart. The EKG machine detects the electrical impulses that contract the heart. The EKG helps in identifying the cause of symptoms such as palpitations or chest pain. The EKG is a painless and harmless test.
Small metal electrodes are attached to the arms, legs and chest. And these electrodes are connected to the EKG machine to detect and amplify the electrical impulses that occur at each heart beat. These electrical impulses are recorded on either on a paper or computer. Different sets of electrodes are used to record heart beats.
People who have heart conditions or diseases undergo EKG and it is done know the following things about the heart.

Heart beating is normal or not
Effects of drugs on heart
the size and position of heart chambers
