Sugary foods taste good and slightly enhance your taste, but most of us don’t realise that it can affect our health. Not just that, what most of us pretend not knowing is that sugar is around us; in canned foods, in fruit juices and in everything that is "commercially" called healthy. 

You might think it is safe to consume sugar in moderation; "a little bit of it won’t hurt", you'd say to yourself, but it all adds up to be problematic. You can’t always keep a count of sugar consumed or read up nutrition labels all the time. Moreover, not all manufacturers reveal how much sweet stuff is added to food during production in the label. As a result, we are up against a host of health problems.

How refined sugar affects body

We eat a lot of refined sugar which a human body cannot cope with. Sugar in some form is naturally present in many foods and has no nutrients, no proteins, no healthy fats and no enzymes. The consumption of empty and quickly-digested calories pull minerals from the body during digestion. 

Watch out for these sugar foods and ingredients

Most of us fall to the phony claims of advertisers that claim a product to contain natural sugar. Actually, these so-called ‘natural sugar’ are complex sugars made by combining simple sugars. The following are sugar-containing foods that you might think as safe.

High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) – It is a combination of fructose and glucose. Eating foods that are high in fructose corn syrup puts you at a greater risk of high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes and coronary diseases.

Ethanol (drinking alcohol)
 – It is not a sugar, but liquors contain residual sugars and starches, in addition to alcohol.

Sugar alcohols – Sugar alcohols that have xylitol, glycerol, sorbitol, maltitol, mannitol and erythritol as ingredients are neither sugars nor alcohols. These have become popular as sweeteners but pose a great health risk. They provide fewer calories than sugar but are incompletely absorbed from your small intestine, to lead to problems such as bloating, diarrhoea and flatulence. 

Sucralose – It is not a sugar, it is just one of the marketing strategies of the corn industry. Actually a chlorinated artificial sweetener, with detrimental health effects to match. Some of the most commonly reported adverse effects are gastrointestinal problems, seizures, dizziness, migraines, blurred vision, allergic reactions, a spike in blood sugar and weight gain.

Honey – Most of the honey and bee products at the departmental stores are not completely in their natural form. 

There’s been a significant surge in obesity, diabetes and other metabolic problems over the last couple of decades, some of which have been a result of sugar overload. So, you need to be extra cautious when choosing sugar foods.
