Cerebral cavernous malformations are a collection of small blood vessels inside the brain that are either enlarged or irregular in structure. The capillaries tend to have abnormally thin walls that lack the support of other tissues such as elastic fibers, which is what makes these cells stretchy. This loss of elasticity makes the blood vessels prone to leakage, which can lead to health problems that are related to this medical condition.
Cavernous malformations may occur on any place in the body and it may cause signs and symptoms such as seizures, headaches, hearing or vision loss, paralysis and bleeding inside the brain. This is called cerebral hemorrhage. A severe case of brain hemorrhage may lead to death. To determine how severe the cavernous malformations are, the doctor checks for the location as well as the number of malformations. The malformations can also change their size and number over a period of time.
As of now, treatments that are available for cavernous malformations include surgery and observation.
Observation: if your cerebral cavernous malformation does not cause any other problem, the doctor may recommend simply observing the condition with magnetic resonance imagining scans being taken yearly so as to detect the changes.
Surgery: this is often the most recommended treatment method for cavernous malformations. Since these malformations are distinct from the surrounding brain tissues, they can be at times, removed completely and the associated seizures cured. It is important for the entire malformation to be removed because it is very likely for it to grow back if even a small piece is left behind. What risk the surgery may pose depends on the size as well as location of the cavernous malformation as well as general health.
