The symptoms of chikungunya fever are similar to dengue fever; hence many cases are often misdiagnosed. Symptoms of the disease usually start 3 – 7 days after an infected bite (but can occur for 2 – 12 days). The fever usually lasts for two days and then defers but symptoms such as joint pain, intense headache, insomnia and an extreme degree of prostration, can persist for about 5 to 7 days. In some cases the joint pain can last for weeks to years beyond the acute stage. Death due to chikungunya infections occurs rarely.
