Acne is the common name of acne vulgaris. It is a common skin disorder caused due to blocked hair follicle or pore (that is the pilosebaceous unit or the gland that produces sebum or oil). It occurs most commonly on the face, neck, chest, back and shoulders - the areas of the skin which have the largest number of oil glands (sebaceous gland).
Signs and symptoms of acne can vary depending on the severity of problem. It can present as;
- Pimples: These are formed when the trapped sebum in the hair follicles gets infected and forms a small swelling that may contain pus.
- Blackheads: These are formed when the opening of the hair follicle gets clogged and blocked with oil secretions, dead skin cells and sometimes bacteria. Melanin in the cells oxidises and is responsible for giving it brown/black color.
- Whiteheads: These are small flesh-or white-colored bumps formed due to trapped sebum in the blocked hair follicle.
- Pustules: These are red, tender acne with white pus at the tip.
- Cysts: Some pimples (acne) can develop a severe inflammatory reaction which can cause painful and large pus filled lesions.
