An adult brain cancer is a condition in which the cells begin to grow abnormally the tissues of the brain or spinal cord.  Central nervous system is made up of brain and spinal cord. The tumours of may be cancerous or benign.  When a tumour grows into or presses an area of the brain, it may stop the part of the brain to work as it used to. A brain tumour that starts elsewhere in the body and spreads to the brain is called a metastatic tumor.

Tumors which begin in brain are known as primary brain tumours and it may spread to other parts of the brain or to the spine. And the tumours found in the brain have started somewhere else in the body and spread to one or more parts of the brain. Such tumors are called metastatic brain tumors.

Symptoms of brain tumor

  • Morning headache
  • Frequent nausea and vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Vision problems
  • Hearing and speech problems
  • Loss of balance and trouble walking
  • Weakness
  • Sleepiness
  • Seizures
  • Changes in the personality

The diagnosis of the cancer is done with the help of the following the tests and procedures :

  • Physical exam and history
  • Neurological exam
  • Visual Field Exam
  • Tumor maker test
  • Gene Testing
  • CT scan
  • MRI
  • Single photon emission Computed Tomography

The prognosis and treatment of the primary brain cancer depend upon the following things.

  • The type of grade of tumor
  • Location of the tumor in the brain
  • whether it can be removed by surgery
  • whether the cancer cells remain after surgery
