What do you understand by Normal complete blood count (CBC)?

The complete blood count (CBC) is a blood test that is most commonly ordered by the doctors. This test is done in various conditions and diseases. The test helps to determine the various cellular of blood (red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets). The complete blood count is done by special machines which can determine the different cells in the blood in less than a minute.

 

The result of a CBC can give important information like;

  • The status of fluid volume in your body (such as if you have dehydration)
  • Loss of blood from your body
  • Help in diagnosis of different types of anemia
  • Help in the diagnosis of infection, allergy

 

Normal complete blood count

 

RBC count in men and women---The normal RBC count in

  • Men is 4.7 to 6.1 million cells/mcL
  • Women is 4.2 to 5.4 million cells/mcL

WBC count: The normal WBC count varies from 4,500 to 10,000 cells/mcL

 

Hematocrit: The hematocrit is different in men and women

  • Men: 40.7 to 50.3 %
  • Women: 36.1 to 44.3 %

Hemoglobin: It is different in men and women

  • Men: 13.8 to 17.2 gm/dL
  • Women: 12.1 to 15.1 gm/dL

Several other important information like the size of the red blood cells, the amount of hemoglobin in each RBC is indicated by the CBC. The normal test value can differ slightly from one laboratory to other. Consult your doctor to understand the meaning of your test result.
