The most common causes of high triglycerides are obesity and poorly controlled diabetes. If you are overweight, you may have high triglycerides, in particular if you eat a lot of carbohydrate or sugary foods or drink a lot of alcohol. Other causes of high triglycerides include kidney disease, hypothyroidism and certain inherited lipid disorders.

Alcohol and Triglycerides

Alcohol abuse (heavy drinking or alcoholism) can lead to increased triglycerides levels. In susceptible people even one drink can lead to increase in blood triglycerides levels.

People with elevated triglycerides levels should reduce or totally avoid not drinking alcohol.

Alcohol causes increase intriglycerides levels due to many reasons:

  • It provides added or excess calories which is converted into fat - usually, triglycerides.
  • It slows down metabolism and prevents the burning of fat---this increases triglycerides levels
  • It reduces the quantity of the enzyme involved in triglycerides metabolism and spurs the liver to make more triglycerides.
  • Most people take alcohol with snacks (chips, peanuts) which further increase your calorie intake and there by triglyceride levels
  • If the drink contains fruit juice, syrups, or other additives that increases the carbohydrate count in the drink----triglyceride levels are further increased.

You can consider alcohol as worse than sugar. When you drink consider the increased calorie intake due to regular alcohol use. Susceptible people in whom even one drink leads to increase in blood triglycerides levels should avoid alcohol.

Some studies suggest that consuming one serving or drink of wine (defined as a 5-ounce a glass of wine)with a meal may have favorably effect on blood lipid profiles. But more than that definitely has adverse effects on your health.

People with elevated triglycerides who are not diabetic can possibly lower their elevated triglycerides just by avoiding alcohol and other lifestyle changes.

Alcohol is known to potentiate the toxicity and side effects of cholesterol-lowering medications such as statins. The risk of serious statin side effects, especially liver problems is increased in people who regularly consume alcohol.

So avoid alcohol if possible completely if you are taking a statin………

Besides the effect on blood lipid profile other diseases which are worsened by alcohol include:

    * Pancreatitis,
    * Liver disease,
    * Diabetes,
    * Hypertension,
    * Depression and
    * Congestive heart failure (CHF), other heart disease

Obesity and Triglycerides

Some facts on Obesity and Triglycerides

  • All obese people do not have elevated blood triglycerides levels but the risk of elevated triglycerides is increased in obese individuals.
  • Studies suggest a significant correlation between obesity and plasma triglycerides---that is heavier individuals have higher triglyceride levels.
  • Triglyceride levels have a more significant correlationwith waist circumference (abdominal obesity) than with body mass index----it is well known that atherogenic dyslipidemia is a basic characteristic of metabolic syndrome.

What can I do to reduce my triglyceride levels?

Weight loss can significantly reduce triglyceride levels. So if you are obese try to reduce and optimize your body weight.

 Weight loss has several other health benefits as well like it reduces the risk of:

  • Type II diabetes,
