Halitosis or bad breath is a common problem. Many people suffer from bad breath at one time or another. The embarrassing condition makes people turn away from you. There can be a plenty of reasons that lead to bad breath.
The most common cause of bad breath is poor dental hygiene. Not brushing your teeth or infrequent brushing may lead to dental plaque and gum diseases that cause a bacterial buildup and a bad odour in your mouth. Consuming strong flavoured foods (such as onions and garlic), poor hydration and a dry mouth condition may also give you bad breath.
Dry mouth can be a result of the use of certain medications, which can lead to bad breath. Sometimes there is a decreased flow of in mouth during sleep; hence, one can get bad breath (often referred to as morning breath). Certain systemic diseases such as cancer, diabetes, liver problems and kidney disorders can be the reason behind bad breath.
Oral Hygiene – To keep bad breath at bay, you need to pay heed to oral hygiene. Brush your teeth at least twice each day with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Replace your toothbrush every five months to ensure that it works effectively. Brushing alone is not enough, use a tongue scraper or tongue cleaner to get rid of bacteria on your tongue. Besides, make a habit to floss daily to remove food particles and plaque that may be embedded between your teeth.
Modify Your Diet - What and how you eat has a major role in how how your breath smells. Avoid foods that encourage a bad breath (such as onions and garlic). If your chew on sprigs of fresh mint and parsley after meals, you can take control over your mouth odours. Make sure you are eating a well-rounded diet that has fibrous foods, fruits and a lot of vegetables.
Stay Hydrated – Drinking plenty of water flushes away the bacteria that cause bad breath. Drink coffee and alcohol in moderation, as both of the foods can lead to a dry mouth and give you an unpleasant breath. Drinking fresh fruit juices and herbal teas instead can prevent a dry mouth and promote natural cleansing of your mouth.
