In fragile situations like this, substances such as certain vitamins may be highly beneficial for the mother and her child but, at the same time they could also cause an irreparable damage to the fetus' health when consumed in excess. Such defects can hinder the growth of the fetus and can only be prevented if the mother is aware of the dangers looming over her and her unborn child. So, here we give you details about vitamins that must not be consumed in excess during pregnancy so as to avert any kind of danger.

Vitamin Toxicity During Pregnancy

Vitamin A

When you enter the first trimester of pregnancy, you must stay vigilant about your consumption of vitamin A. Vitamin A is a fat soluble vitamin which makes its excessive consumption dangerous. It is stored in the body’s fatty tissues instead of being excreted. When the vitamin is consumed excessively it can have toxic effects on the development of the fetus. Although vitamin A is important for vision development and genetic formation, excessively consuming it has been established to be a cause for many malformations in one-fifth of fetuses exposed during the first trimester.

Sources of Excessive Vitamin A

Anti-acne medications like accutane and retin-A are a rich source of vitamin A. The over-use of accutane has been a cause of 26-times higher chances of head, face, and brain malformations, heart defects, and malformations of thymus gland. A direct relationship has been established between the consumption of vitamin A and the intensity of the malformations which means the more vitamin A is consumed the severe malformations can be.

Vitamin Toxicity During Pregnancy

Vitamin D Toxicity

Another vitamin that can be highly hazardous for the fetus’s health is vitamin D. When consumed in excess by the mother, vitamin D can lead to malformation of the heart valves in the fetus and can lead to miscarriage.

Vitamin D Deficiency

Women who are darker in complexion are at an increased risk of vitamin D deficiency when compared white white women. The deficiency of this vitamin can lead to smaller, lighter babies who have brittle bones and inadequate tooth enamel mineralization.

It becomes vital for every woman to know the pros and cons of everything she eats during pregnancy to ensure proper development of her unborn child.
