Viagra the ugly truth

Viagra Yes, Viagra does work for men with erectile dysfunction and enhance performance. No, it is not free from side-effects, just like any other drug.

There is no doubt about it – it delivers what it promises. The flipside is that it may deliver a lot more than that. Very few drugs work perfectly, and the same is the case with Viagra.

Almost all drugs have side effects that arise because the drug is flowing throughout the body and may thus affect parts of the body inadvertently.

Viagra has several side effects of which patients need to be aware -

  • It affects color vision. People taking Viagra notice a difference in the way they perceive colors like blue and green – or they see everything with a bluish tint for a couple of hours. There is thus a reason why pilots aren’t allowed to take Viagra within 12 hours of a flight.
  • There is another problem for those consuming drugs like nitroglycerin for angina. Nitroglycerin leads to an increase nitric oxide, and it aids with angina by opening up the arteries which contribute oxygen to the heart. If one takes nitroglycerin and Viagra mutually, the enlarged nitric oxide can lead to problem(s).
  • You also risk a possible heart attack with Viagra, and this is why Viagra is a prescription drug rather than an over-the-counter drug like aspirin. It depends on your medical history to make sure you can take Viagra without being a likely victim of a heart attack.
  • Occasional patients who take Viagra get painful, long-lasting erections – thus needing a doctor to take care of such problems.
  • Flushing, stomach upset, heartburn, nasal stuffiness, diarrhea, severe dizziness, fainting, chest pain, nausea, dizziness or lightheadedness may occur.
  • Though serious allergic reactions do not usually occur, you should still get in touch with a doctor immediately if you notice something wrong.
  • Rash, itching, unusual swelling, severe dizziness and trouble breathing are symptomatic of a serious allergic reaction.
  • Finally, there is some concern that some men, especially the younger ones who use Viagra recreationally and don't really need it for physical reasons, may end up with a drug dependency. That is, they may not be able to maintain an erection without resorting to Viagra.

Rohit, a 29 year-old MNC employee says, “Viagra is definitely good for people who need it to stand up to the occasion. And even for young people who don’t really need it, using it once in a blue moon doesn’t hurt either!”

Besides these medical side-effects, there is also the entire gamut of emotional dilemma to deal with. Viagra has become the best thing to happen to mankind next to sliced bread – and it seems to have a cult following.

However, the truth remains that Viagra is not a magic pill, it does not create love. And it will not give you an erection either, if you are not willing to meet desire halfway. It had been created as a specific solution to a specific problem – and unwise use of such a ‘potent’ drug can result in many such side-effects.

If you are having difficulties having erections, yet erotica makes you feel aroused, psychologically if not physically, then Viagra could help you to masturbate. However Viagra has nothing to do with helping a man have orgasms. That problem belongs to the department of libido, the sex drive. So if you’re having erections and masturbating yet not having orgasms, then Viagra is not the answer.

Then again, for users who are prescribed this drug, for legitimate reasons and not just for added fun – there is the social stigma attached to Viagra too, however hypocritical it may be.

Jokes about it abound movies and books, and Viagra use can thus raise a lot other things, for instance – one’s neighbor’s eyebrows, at their manhood (or the supposed lack of it).
It may be the answer for millions, though for others it will remain a pill whose reputation is more potent than its effect. And that’s the ugly truth.
