A research at the Sapienza University in Rome suggests that Viagra encourages blood flow and improves heart performance. The study only focused on heart diseases in men this time, though the next phase will involve female patients. The study was published in a recent edition of the peer-reviewed journal BMC Medicine. The following are the key findings of the study.

Viagra doesn’t harm Cardiac Function

This was the first time the effects of Viagra in relation to the human heart’s size, shape and performance have been looked at. It was found that the main ingredient in Viagra can be used as an effective, safe treatment for several patients with heart disease. The research busted the long-standing myth – Viagra can harm the cardiac function. On the contrary, Viagra can benefit one’s cardiovascular health.

Heart Patients that can Benefit from Viagra

The study found that those who benefited most from Viagra usage suffered from heart failure or left ventricular hypertrophy, a condition involving the enlargement of tissue near the walls of the heart muscles that pump blood. The researchers involved in the study observed the effects of the drug on the heart by testing the effectiveness of phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor (PDE5i), an ingredient in Viagra that prevents muscle tissue from relaxing.

Why further Pilot Studies are needed?

On the basis of pilot studies on the subjects, the researchers confirmed that 1,622 male patients taking Viagra or a placebo experienced improved heart performance with no negative effects on their blood pressure levels. Despite positive results, there is still a concern over the long-term use of PDE5i. Daily use of PDE5i can cause headaches, flushing, nosebleeds and other gastric symptoms. Viagra use can be made safe for men coping with heart muscle thickening and early-stage heart failure with moderation.

Viagra, also referred to as sildenafil, has revolutionized the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Now, it has given hope to millions of heart patients.
