A skin toner is often applied after washing the face with soap and water and before applying moisturizer or makeup. It is used to minimize the size of pores and eliminate excess oil from your face. But, they have a bad reputation as a beauty care product because they may leave your skin dry. Toners with modern formulae, however, come with different varieties that do more than just reduce the size of pores. They refresh, tighten, cleanse and moisturize the skin for a healthy glow. Here are types of toners that you should know about.

TYpes of toner

Skin bracers or fresheners

They are the mildest form of toners because they contain virtually no alcohol (0-10%), water, and a humectant such as glycerine. The role of humectants is to keep moisture in the upper layers of the epidermis intact by preventing it from evaporating. Rose water is one of the most popular examples of fresheners. They are most suitable for dry, sensitive and normal skin types.

Skin tonics

If you need something stronger than fresheners, you can go for skin tonics that contain a small quantity of alcohol, usually up to 20%, water and a humectant ingredient. Orange flower water makes a perfect example of skin tonics. Such toners are suitable for normal, combination and oily skin.

Astringents

Finally, comes the astringent, which is the strongest toner as it contains a high proportion of alcohol (20-60%), antiseptic ingredients, water and a humectant ingredient. They are most suitable for oily skin as they remove excess sebum and cleanse the skin thoroughly. Witch hazel is an example of an astringent.
