Ayurveda is a holistic system of treatment and is the oldest healing science that focuses on maintaining a physically and emotionally balanced state of the body. This system of medicine was shaped in the ancient lands of India about 5,000–6,000 years ago.
According to ayurveda, every person has a distinct pattern of energy; a specific combination of physical, mental, and emotional characteristics just like all of us have a unique thumbprint. Based on this concept of energy, ayurveda considers that there are three basic energy types called doshas, which are present in every person.
According to ayurveda all of us have all the three doshas, however only 1 or 2 are dominant in an individual. The physiological and personality traits and general likes and dislikes of any person are determined by his various dosha proportions. For example, a person with vata dosha prefers hot weather to cold and people with kapha dosha prefer spicy foods. Dosha balance can be disturbed by various reasons such as stress, an unhealthy diet, the weather, and strained family relationships. The disturbance of doshas is expressed in the body as disease. Ayurvedic treatment aims to restore the doshas back into balance.
