To save foetus a woman stays upside down

A British woman who suffered from repetitive miscarriage has finally given birth to a baby girl. What makes this a unique medical case is the fact that the 29 year old woman lay upside down on the hospital bed for nearly three months.

This British woman named Donna Kelly had a weak cervix. In her fifth months of pregnancy, she was told by the doctors that she was at a high risk of losing another baby. On realising the risk involved, she agreed to spend 24 hours of her day on a hospital bed. To reduce the pressure on the cervix, she was made to lie down on a bed that was tilted skywards; her feet were at a higher level than her head. All this was done under the expert eyes of Professor Siobhan Quenby, who specialises in recurrent miscarriages.

For three months Donna Kelly ate, read and watched TV in the same position and was allowed to leave the bed only when she had to go to the toilet. After three months of lying upside down, she had a caesarean and delivered a premature baby, who was later named Amelia. At the time of birth, the baby weighted only five pounds and was kept in intensive care unit  for two weeks.

Donna Kelly and her husband are now happily looking forward for the Christmas and New Year celebrations with the new member of their family.

Obstetrician and gynaecologist of Donna Kelly, Professor Quenby, said that Donna’s medical case was a rare one. It is only 0.5% of pregnant women who may have a miscarriage in the second trimester of pregnancy. He continued by saying that "the treatment may sound strange, but is very effective for such medical cases".

Further researches are being carried out at the University Hospital to find out other methods that may not require the patient to be hospitalised for such a long duration.
