Won’t you be taken aback if you are being charged with a DUI even when you have not had drinks, only to later found that your body brews its own alcohol. Well, this happened to a woman in New York, who has been charged with a DUI for having a blood alcohol level more than 4 times the legit limit, however, the charges were dismissed by a judge after looking at the evidence that suggests the woman actually has auto- brewery syndrome. So, let’s see what exactly this condition is.
This auto-brewery syndrome, also known as gut-fermentation syndrome, is a rare medical condition which occurs when abnormal amounts of gastrointestinal yeast convert common food carbohydrates into ethanol. The process of conversion takes place in the small bowel, and is vastly different from the normal gut fermentation that happens in the large intestine and provides energy to your body.
It was first described as the germ carbohydrate fermentation in 1912, and was later studied in the 1930s and '40s as a contributing factor for causing vitamin deficiencies and irritable bowel syndrome. Some years ago, cases involving Candida albicans and Candida krusei were reported in Japan and in 2013, where a 61 year old man had been reported to have frequent bouts of unexplained drunkenness for years before he was diagnosed with an intestinal overabundance of Saccharomyces cerevisiae.
