Miscarriage can be a very agonising and traumatic experience for a woman. It can affect her both emotionally and physically. You may experience a variety of emotions after a miscarriage and most women have varying degree of grief.

Taking Care after a Miscarriage

You may cry without a reason, have disturbed sleep and disturbing dreams, disturbed eating patterns, and mental confusion. For some women this emotional and physical effect can make it difficult for her to take care of herself after a miscarriage.

 

Support and counselling

You and your partner may find it difficult to understand why and how this has happened to you and handle your feelings. During this critical juncture it is important to accept and acknowledge the feeling of grief and extreme sadness rather than hiding or feeling ashamed of your emotions. Support from family, friends or if needed a professional counselor, can help you to understand and deal with your emotions and overcome the grief.

 

Take rest and care for yourself

After a miscarriage, you need take care of yourself to recover physically. Some things which can probably help are include-taking some time off from work if possible, getting enough sleep at night, eating healthy and making sure that you are getting enough rest.

 

Watch for bleeding and other problems

Vaginal bleeding occurs after miscarriage (which is dark red or brown in colour) for 7—10 days. If the bleeding continues for longer than 7-8 days or is heavy or appears to be bright red in colour consult your doctor. Do not swim while you are bleeding as it makes you vulnerable to infections. Use sanitary towels and not tampons as they increase the risk of infection. In most women periods return in 4 - 6 weeks. Some women have breast tenderness for several days, but this improves slowly. If needed, wear a firm, supporting bra during this time to reduce tenderness and discomfort.

 

Avoid sex

Do not to have sex for at least 2 - 3 weeks or till you and your partner are over the emotional upset.

 

Follow-up with the doctor

If the doctor considers it necessary you will be given a follow-up appointment before you leave the hospital. At the follow-up, the doctor can check your health and progress. If you have any problems consult your doctor for advice.

 

Miscarriage is distressing and painful but knowing the fact that most women go on to have healthy babies after a miscarriage can provide some relief.

    It doesn't matter if anyone understands how you feel or what you are going through, just accept and acknowledge it. It is not easy to deal with loss of pregnancy. Take time to grieve and make sure that you are well.
