Homeopathic remedies have been shown to be effective in arthritis. Treatment of any illness in homeopathy is individualized as different people respond to the same illness in different ways. According to homeopathy the symptoms of any illness or disease are due to the efforts of the person's immune and defense system to fight infection, deal with stress, or try to heal itself. Hence any homeopathic medication that is chosen is based on its unique ability to mimic the very symptoms that the sick person is experiencing. Homeopathic remedies aim to aid the body's own defenses in healing unlike conventional drugs which usually treat or suppress the symptoms.
A study on efficacy of homeopathic remedies in arthritis showed that 82% of patients with rheumatoid arthritis had pain relief after being prescribed an individually chosen homeopathic medicine. But in the placebo group (patients who were not treated with homeopathic remedy) only 21% of patients had similar degree of relief.
In another study done in patients with fibromyalgia patients treated with Rhus toxicodendron (poison ivy) had improvement in all the areas that was evaluated (pain relief, sleep, and overall assessment). However many studies on efficacy of homeopathic medicines in the treatment of arthritis conditions, have not shown such convincing results.
