Acne during pregnancy
Hormonal fluctuations and elevated levels of pregnancy hormones have a role to play in eruptions happening on your skin during pregnancy. The sebaceous glands may go on an overdrive triggering increased oil production and eventually there are eruptions all over your skin. Acne during pregnancy may erupt at various stages and may eventually go after delivery while sometimes lingering on after childbirth.
Dealing with Acne
You cannot prevent the problem of acne but can reduce the severity and reoccurrence by following certain tips:
Choose over-the-counter medications with caution as certain chemicals in the medications are not safe during pregnancy. It is better to consult your doctor before you use any medicated solutions. Use natural products as much as possible and follow everyday beauty regimen.
Stretch marks during pregnancy
Stretch marks appear on the abdomen area, thighs and breasts during pregnancy as the body expands and stretches to accommodate a developing fetus. When the dermis (the middle layer of the skin responsible for elasticity and strength) undergoes constant stretching, it ruptures in various places and leads to formation of stretch marks. They appear as pink in colour and later become glossy white in colour; stretch marks never fade away completely.
Many creams and lotions promise to treat stretch marks; there is no concrete proof of it though. Cocoa butter and vitamin E can help only to an extent in lightening the stretch marks. Creams containing glycolic acid are helpful too. Laser treatments can help in the treatment of stretch marks after delivery. During pregnancy, make sure you gain weight gradually and do not put on more than the desired weight. Keep your body well moisturized at all times of pregnancy.
Itchy skin and Rashes during Pregnancy
Itchy skin during pregnancy happens due to the body’s hormonal changes and also as the skin constantly stretches and expands to accommodate the growing baby. Excessive itching can lead to formation of rashes on the affected area. Also as there is an increase in the hormone estrogen, many women complain of red and itchy inflammation on the soles of the feet and palms. Having a dry skin type can make the situation worse while sometimes allergy and skin disorders like eczema are to be blamed.
At Home Solutions
In some rare cases, itching in the stomach area can be pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy (PUPPP); it is indicated by red, itchy bumps. They are seen first on the abdomen but later can spread on the thighs, breasts and buttocks. PUPPP is not harmful either for the mother or for the baby though it can be quite irritating. In case of any skin irritation, it is better if one consults a doctor so as to rule out any potential health conditions. Very rarely, itchy skin eruptions in a pregnant woman can mean pemphigoid gestationis and another condition called intrahepatic cholestatsis which can harm the growth and development of the fetus.
