Sample Meal Plan for Gestational Diabetes

Women with gestational diabetes must eat a particular diet and exercise other chores to prevent the chances of soaring blood sugar levels. While any diet plan may work in controlling the diabetic condition, a customised plan is what works the best because the latter is based exclusively on your health i.e. your height, weight, activity level, glucose levels and stage of pregnancy. Below mentioned is a sample meal plan for women with gestational diabetes.

6 a.m. –7 a.m.

One glass of milk of 250 ml approximately without sugar and mixed with 20gm roasted gram.


8 a.m. – 9 a.m.
 

Two whole wheat slices of bread with 50 gm of cottage cheese or paneer (non-vegetarians may have one boiled eggs), two chapattis, any vegetable sabzi along with a bowl of curd or four idlis/2 dosas with sambar. Drink one glass of milk without sugar and remember to use only 1 tsp of oil when cooking food.


11 a.m.

Have one medium-sized fruit like pear, guava, apple, plum, peach, jamun or sweet lime.


1 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Start your lunch with a quarter of salad that includes tomato, cucumber, radish and carrot. Follow it up with one or two bowls of seasonal vegetables, a bowl of dal, a bowl of curd, two to three chapattis and 2 tbsps of rice. When cooking lunch, make sure that you use2 tsp of oil.

4 p.m.

Drink a cup of milk without sugar.


6 p.m.

Take a bowl of sprouts along with vegetable juice or soup.


8 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Have a dinner that is similar to your lunch, but you may try a different variety to avoid monotony in your diet.


Before going to Bed

Have one glass of milk along with a small sized fruit.


Few Guidelines

Avoid consuming concentrated and sugar sweet foods or beverages as these make it difficult to control the blood glucose levels in women with gestational diabetes.

Eat foods that are high in fibrous foods. Eating foods that are high in fibre will pull the level of high blood glucose down.

Do not skip your meals and eat at least 3 meals along with 3 snacks every day. Eat meals at the same time every day.

Request your health care provider to help you get in touch with a dietician so the latter can counsel you on how to develop a meal plan that is right for you.

Avoid consuming concentrated and sugar sweet foods or beverages as these make it difficult to control the blood glucose levels in women with gestational diabetes.
