The latest court verdict in the cocaine case under which the Bollywood actor Fardeen Khan was charged in 2001, relieves him from the charge of possession, and instead fixes a charge of being guilty of purchasing the illegal substance. This lesser charge would enable him to ask for relief under the Narcotics Act and go for a rehabilitation programme instead of being sentenced. The case would be over as soon as Fardeen completes the rehabilitation course at a government hospital.
Fardeen was arrested in 2001 and charged along with a co-accused Nasir Abdul Karim for being in possession of 9 grams of cocaine. According to the NDPS Act, a person found with less than 9 grams of a contraband substance would get only 6 months sentence. The actor expressed his relief and re-affirmed his faith in the judiciary after the verdict, after it has been declared in the verdict that the actor had only purchased one gram of cocaine.
It is important the law and government authorities take every precaution to prevent drug abuse in society, and crack down on culprits even if they are celebrities. In the instance of Fardeen, whether it was a case of the actor being guilty of only possessing the contraband substance, or using his position of influence to twist the natural process of law, we would never know!
