Red Wine vs White Wine

But has it occurred to you that both the wines could be different in terms of their effect on your body? If not, then here are some insights into the nutritional value of both the types, which will help you decide which one is best for you.

Calories

Talking about calorie intake, while one serving of red wine gives you 125 calories, one serving of white wine contains just 120 calories.

Carbohydrates

While the red drink contains 4.1g of carbs, its white counterpart wins once again with only 3.8g per serving.

Sugar

Compared to white wine, red wine contains very less natural sugar with only 0.9g per serving, while white wine has 1.4g of natural sugar.

Calcium

Both the types contain the same amount of calcium, which is only 1 percent.

Red Wine vs White Wine

Magnesium

Red wine: 5 percent
White wine: 4 percent

Potassium

Red wine: 5 percent
White wine: 3 percent

Carotenoids

Red wine contains more of lutein and zeaxanthin, which are needed for healthier eyes. While red wine contains 7 mcg of carotenoids, white contains 0mcg. These nutrients are required for the body to prevent macular degeneration.

Choline

Choline helps in preventing inflammation and liver damage. Red wine is a clear champion here too with 8.4mg, while its white counterpart only contains 6.3mg.

Result

Considering the above mentioned nutritional value of both the types, red wine wins hands down. It is a healthier choice as it contains more minerals and anitoxidants and less of sugar. The chief ingredient used to make red wine is resveratrol, which is a potent antioxidant found in grapes. The research suggests that resveratrol can prevent the growth of cancer and breast cancer cells. Red wine provides cardiovascular benefits which can protect the heart from harmful condition like atherosclerosis. Although white wine may not supply the same amount of minerals and antioxidant power as red wine, but consuming premium white wines from particular winemakers can give more health benefits than some types of red wine.
