Prognosis of Rosacea

Rosacea is a chronic skin disease which tends to affect the skin (most commonly the facial skin) and maybe the eyes. Some of the symptoms include redness, pimples, and thicker skin (in later stages of the disease). In most people rosacea affects only the facial skin. The condition is not contagious or infectious and it does not spread by contact with the skin, sharing towels, or through inhalation. Following is a detailed prognosis of rosacea.

  • The disease can vary in severity from mild to severe. Many people with rosacea remain unaware of their condition as it is difficult to diagnose and hence may never seek treatment.
  • Rosacea is a chronic skin condition but it is not dangerous or fatal. The condition cannot be cured but can usually be controlled with treatment.
  • Response to treatment is variable. Most people with mild forms of the disease can manage or control their signs and symptoms by simply avoiding triggers factors and irritants.
  • Some patients note good improvement with tetracycline-class medicines within a few weeks, while others may need several different treatments before a satisfactory response is noted. Moreover, some patients may not have appreciable improvement, despite treatment with different drugs or treatment modalities.
  • The condition improves with treatment in most people but it does not show total remission. It is a life-long condition and you may have better control at times and intermittent flare-ups at others. If you do not care well for your skin and take medications as recommended, rosacea may progress to a more disfiguring condition.
  • Some people may develop complications such as permanent changes in appearance (for example, a bulbous nose) due to the severe form of disease and psychological damage, depression, loss of self-esteem as a result of changes in appearance.
